Frequently Asked Questions

How does Dex protect my child’s privacy?

We take privacy seriously and have the ex-CISO of Google Devices (Cory Scott) on our advisory board. Dex is designed to be COPPA-compliant, does not store any identifiable information, and only processes images for immediate learning activities. Sensitive data by default has strict retention periods. Data is either processed locally on the device or securely encrypted if it’s sent for cloud-based features. You retain full control over any saved content (such as deletion), and no data is shared with third parties.

Is Dex safe for kids to use?

Absolutely. We’ve implemented extensive, rigid safety control (such as stop-list to block generative content) on all (even border-line) risky topics. As a result, Dex might decline a lot of topics/tasks that would have been okay with many of our Beta testers. Our policy puts safety first such that we’d rather Dex be less capable than being wrong/unsafe.

Regarding hardware: Dex is designed with child safety in mind, using durable, non-toxic materials and rounded edges. We’ve also ensured there are no small or detachable parts that pose choking hazards. Plus, the device includes parental controls so you can supervise and customize your child’s usage.

How does Dex compare to tablets or smartphones?

While tablets and smartphones can be versatile devices, Dex is purpose-built for interactive learning. Its camera-based learning approach encourages real-world exploration rather than passive screen time. This focused design reduces distractions like games or social media, helping your child learn more effectively.

What ages is Dex suitable for?

Dex is ideal for children aged 3-8, though older kids may also find it engaging. The content evolves with your child’s learning level, offering early-stage letter recognition for preschoolers and more advanced phonics or vocabulary building for elementary-age learners.

Does Dex need an internet connection to work?

The current version of Dex needs the Internet with a few offline modes available. Having said that, the LTE eSIM should be always on. You could also connect Dex to any Wifi using a co-pilot app.

We absolutely love The Dex! As a family of five with kids ages 4, almost 6, and 8, we’ve been searching for a fun way to introduce a second language early on. Growing up in Southern California, bilingualism isn’t just practical; it’s an important part of cultural awareness, which is a core value in our home.

The Dex completely blew us away. It engages all of our kids at once, which is no small feat, and turns language learning into an adventure. They’re running around the house scanning toys, books, and random objects, excitedly shouting out new words in another language. And the best part? They’re doing it independently without us having to guide every step.

It’s the perfect supplement to any language immersion program. It is playful, interactive, and genuinely effective. Learning a language suddenly feels less like a lesson and more like a game, and that’s exactly what we were hoping for.

What a great product this is in expanding their Mandarin vocabulary. Our little one loves to use it during meal times to complement stories in his books, and on road trips to identify new plants, trinkets, and other objects. The wireless connectivity works really well, and its ability to work out what our son is taking a photo of is impressively accurate; which he can then revisit later at night in the form of a flash card game. We love using Dex and it's allowed us to bond even closer through language.

The older kiddo (3.5) has been using his Dex for a few months now and it’s kept his interest sparked and is still part of his daily routine. He enjoys the stories but I think the camera and associated image recognition is still the best part, my Chinese is poor at best but now I can ask him what different objects we encounter in the world are and instead of going to ask his mom or saying I don’t know, he will run to get the Dex and snap a photo and then “teach” me! His grandma also lives with us and only speaks Chinese so it has been a great way for them to interact and she will help him with pronunciations.

At barely two his little brother is a bit young for it, but is getting better at copying his brother and is still able to use the camera function and get excited when he gets some of the simpler words to ding that he said it correctly and gets a star like his big brother does.

We LOVE Dex. Our 3 year old has been learning Spanish since he was 5 months old, but rarely engaged in actively speaking it with us. Since we started using Dex a few weeks ago, he now speaks Spanish daily with us. He will even giggle and correct Dex if there is a hiccup (we're in the BETA program), and he loves showing everyone around him how it works and taking it on adventures.

We also can't say enough good things about the team behind Dex. Every inquiry, safety concern, etc. has been met with such grace and REAL information. Not once have we been met with glossed over answers; transparency at it's finest. This product is made by parents, for parents (and their kiddos). Thank you, Susan, and everyone at Dex.

My kid really loves it! The battery lasts for around two full day for each charge. He keeps snapping pictures of new things so there is barely any repetition in the words. I wish there was a way for him to go through a gallery of things he has snapped so he can review it (rather than just keep snapping new things)
