Update two weeks later: 1. I'm having to limit Dex time, and I think that's a win. 2. I'm engaged in the Dex online community and seeing great discussions about new features. 3. I have now ordered a second one for the other child. The third will be as a gift.
Gregory, dad of two learning Spanish
We LOVE Dex. Our 3 year old has been learning Spanish since he was 5 months old, but rarely engaged in actively speaking it with us. Since we started using Dex a few weeks ago, he now speaks Spanish daily with us.
Cody, mom of a 3yo learning Spanish
Our little one loves to use it during meal times to complement stories in his books, and on road trips to identify new plants, trinkets, and other objects. The wireless connectivity works really well, and its ability to work out what our son is taking a photo of is impressively accurate; which he can then revisit later at night in the form of a flash card game.
Andrew, dad of of 5 yo learning Mandarin
Upon receiving our DEX and getting it setup, my 7 year old daughter can’t put it down. The setup was super simple and the instructions were very easy to follow.
Matt, dad of a 7yo learning Spanish
Our son has nothing but pure delight for the Dex. What a wonderful product for kids! They will forget all about their tablets.
Eric, dad of a 5yo learning Mandarin
As a second-generation Korean American who is fluent in Korean, it has been so special to see my 5-year-old daughter learning new vocabulary and connecting with her heritage in such a fun and engaging way.
Sunny, mom of 5yo learning Korean
The older kiddo (3.5) has been using his Dex for a few months now and it’s kept his interest sparked and is still part of his daily routine. His grandma also lives with us and only speaks Chinese so it has been a great way for them to interact and she will help him with pronunciations.

Our Story, Shared with the World.
"Rosenthal partnered with otherparents to create the Dex learning camera, a device which aims to teach kids new languages, hoping to emphasize learning as well as play in part to cut down on excess screen time."
"The camera allows kids to take pictures of any object they want and then teaches them how to pronounce the name of the object in a foreign language."
"While kid-focused language learning apps like Duolingo Kids exist, Dex argues that it takes a more engaging approach that emphasizes hands-on experiences, allowing children to immerse themselves in the language."
"The concern that children become disconnected from their native language and culture of their hometown during their growth has become a common anxiety among many Chinese immigrant parents in the United States. This has also led to the birth of Dex Camera."
“'Rigid safety prompts' are included whenever the large language model is used across vision, reasoning, and text-to-speech."
"The success of AI educational toys like Dex may ultimately depend on proving they genuinely support child development rather than creating new dependencies."

While tablets and smartphones can be versatile devices, Dex is purpose-built for language learning. Its camera-based learning approach encourages real-world exploration rather than passive screen time. This focused design reduces distractions like games or social media, helping your child learn more effectively.
We take privacy seriously and have the ex-CISO of Google Devices (Cory Scott) on our advisory board. Dex is designed to be COPPA-compliant, strictly enforces Zero Data Retention, and only processes images for immediate learning activities then discard. Sensitive data by default has strict retention periods. Data is either processed locally on the device or securely encrypted if it’s sent for cloud-based features. You retain full control over any saved content (such as deletion), and no data is shared with third parties. For details, visit our Privacy Policies.
Absolutely. We’ve implemented extensive, rigid safety control (such as stop-list to block generative content) on all (even border-line) risky topics. As a result, Dex might decline a lot of topics/tasks that would have been okay with many of our Beta testers. Our policy puts safety first such that we’d rather Dex be less capable than being wrong/unsafe.
Regarding hardware: Dex is designed with child safety in mind, using durable, non-toxic materials and rounded edges.
The current version of Dex needs the Internet with a few offline modes available. Having said that, the LTE eSIM should be always on. You could also connect Dex to any Wifi using a co-pilot app.
